Are these clowns real?

OK, in the past 24 hours of social media, I have seen a pic of a racist note asking a day care center to fire an worker because she was "too dark" to be with the kids, footage of ICE harassing a family needlessly, and an assortment of other madcap twirls and fits that I kept having to stop and ask, "Wait, is this real? Are you sure this is real?"

One of the twirls was a story claiming that the head of Amazon dropped a baseball bat studded with nails between the mayors of two cities and asked them how bad they wanted the second headquarters to be built in their towns. I had to scroll down to the end, because that is actually plausible right now.

No, really. Think about what's been on the news the last year or so. Every week. Now: in light of that: is having a CEO of one of the world's most powerful companies silently challenge two city politicians to deathmatch one another for an exclusive deal worth untold millions really so impossible?

No. It's not.

Not today, it isn't.

That one, I am pretty confident, was a joke. But only because it ended with the two men diving for the bat while the CEO looked on and laughed. And while I can see the bat being dropped by some git who thinks he's being clever, this culture isn't quite to the point of men in tailored business suits killing each other like a scene from Escape From New York.

Not yet, anyway.

But the rest of the text, images and videos.... yeah, I really don't know for certain.

Have you ever watched a movie that was so bad, and got so distracted and aimless, that it actually seemed to be lampooning itself? A movie where, to all appearances, it had resorted to becoming a parody of itself?

Right. Me, too.

That's where we are right now. We are living in that movie. The United States has become, in effect, a parody of itself. Take all of US history, crumple it up, and hand it to a grade-schooler to make a caricature out of... and this is the result. All the high points, all at once and in cartoon-like over the top effect. Some of the cast is great, but man, nothing can save this kind of writing. And don't even talk to me about direction and editing.

Years ago, The Pitch ran a story on the The Racist With Pamphlets in Kansas City. He had to be careful, this guy, because he was alone... and had to make certain he didn't get caught. He was a scared man. A weak man who knew he was outnumbered, and that the days of his ideology were dwindling fast.

Earlier today, at my college - my embracing, intellectual, Jesuit-values, all-inclusive college - some dink posted racist pamphlets on the outer doors of the residence halls. It was probably no one who actually attends, if only because students know that there are cameras covering those areas and the priest who runs the joint has exactly zero sense of humor about such nonsense.

But still. some dink went out in the early a.m., went on private property that is known to be patrolled and monitored, and repeatedly posted racist literature.

Maybe they felt that safe with their message. Or maybe their hatred empowered them. Or maybe that was just the statement that said dink wanted to make with his or her life, and if they got caught they thought they'd be a martyr for the cause.

Wow. Just... wow.

I know that fascism is on its way out. Likewise sexism, racism, and so forth... some aspects of each more slowly than others. And each facet of hate, ignorance, or oppression, as it feels its death encroaching, lashes out. Blindly, almost. Like a venomous serpent with a broken back, doing whatever damage it can before it's gone. The Nazis did that, executing as many people as fast as they could, even while the Allies were knocking on their doors. Robespierre pulled a similar trick. Probably the Romans did, too. It isn't a smart move, but these aren't smart people.

So I look at humanity a thousand years ago, then five hundred years, then fifty years, then today, and... yeah, okay. Slow and uneven progress is still progress. I can dig it.

But I was thinking that maybe they'd get smarter, lash out a little less. Silly me. this isn't high comedy, after all. They'll make faces and drop their pants, tell some fart jokes. And then they'll release the Zyklon B. Drop the guillotine. Light the dry wood fast, before the witches get freed. Because that is what they do.

And sometimes, when everything is going everywhere in little pieces, or threatening to, and the heavy solutions for the heavy problems are still dangling right out of reach, all you can do is laugh. It's always a challenge to laugh when the joke is told at your expense, but after a while I usually manage.

Better than giving a blindly destructive, dying breed the dignity of tears. Any day.

And Now, a Random Gazette

I have now officially been accepted back into college after my hiatus to help the Dowager Empress with her living situation. With that, I should be able to begin classes again this coming fall.

And there was much rejoicing!

Fanfare: Sydney Opera House – Young Composers on High Alert! | The ...
There is also still time to enter the contest Lauren is holding to celebrate our release of Book III: Where Flap the Tatters of the King. If you weren't already aware, the winner gets autographed copies of Books I-III delivered to their door! (The initial offer was for one of your choice, but a misunderstanding on my part quickly became the winner's gain.) You can enter here, until the 15th.

The Order of the Four SonsO4S Book II: CarcosaWhere Flap the Tatters of the King

And yes, it's true: Lauren, my esteemed co-author and friend, is moving from the Midwest to sunny Florida. Her husband, Patrick, got a new job there. New adventures beckon from white sands and emerald waves, and they will make the perilous journey with only their wits and their Ferocious Beasts to guard them.

Bane of all the Technologeez.

But while this will give us a few challenges here and there, never fear. We will continue writing until the series is done, and perhaps even longer. One of the glories of modern technology is that distance is simply not the barrier it once was.

The Dowager Empress is preparing to dwell in her new and permanent home. Lauren is embarking on a new journey across the land. I return to academia, triumphant. In addition, I will have two of my Magnificent Offspring attending college themselves soon, shortly followed by the third. All this, and continuing formatting in preparation to release Book IV. This is a time of change and adventure for everyone, and I could not be more excited.

Coming soon: I will have the pleasure of interviewing author D. Allen Rutherford. Mr. Rutherford is the author of The Wargs Trilogy, as well as a former army officer and a retired international technology consultant. Until then, keep reading, keep living, and keep having adventures!

O4S Book II Available!

Yes, you read that aright.

The Order of the Four Sons: Carcosa was just issued a surprise pre-holiday release in e-book form. If you've already read Book I, this is the event you've been waiting for. If you haven't... now is the perfect time to start.

For those of you who prefer hard copies, never fear: Carcosa will be available in paperback format on December 4th.

As always, the beautiful art of Ms. Erin Kelso brings the characters to life. In this case, Lady Bathory and her deadly little Katarina are in the foreground of the world our heroes have found themselves in.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I though I would give you a small taste of what is to come...

The farmhouse was positively provincial. Still, at least it had a tub.
Elizabeth Bathory sighed contentedly, allowing herself to slip deeper into the soothing warmth. So much had happened after so much waiting. When she had arrived with Katarina, she had been all but spent. Ultimately, it had been Kat who had gone to the door, and made arrangements with the peasants who lived here. Not even a day had gone by, and the Countess found much of her strength already returning.
Lazily, she opened her eyes, enjoying the luxury of it all for the first time in far too many months. She sighed contentedly. “It never ceases to amaze me just how rejuvenating a good bath can be.”
Katarina smiled, flushing prettily. “I knew you would be all right, Mistress. You always are.”
“Yes.” No sound but the steady drip, drip, drip. Liquid lapped at the rim of the tub, just below the point of overflowing. “Have you found anything suitable for me to wear?”
Katarina shook her head. The light of the oil lamp played in the copper glints in her auburn hair, like sparks being struck against red rock. “No, Mistress. I took the liberty of cleaning your dress, so you might wear it again.”
Bathory sighed again. “Probably for the best. I never could abide the frocks these people insist on wearing anyway.”
“Shall I get you your towel, Mistress?”
Bathory nodded and grasped the sides of the bathtub to rise. “Yes. I think so. I do feel much better, but I think this one is just about done. It’s starting to get cold.” As she spoke, she looked up at the source of her bath.
The young girl’s body, bruised and broken, hung by its ankles from the ceiling, her throat parted in a perfect red slit, half-clotted droplets hanging dully from her blood-darkened hair. Her dead eyes were still fastened on the tub below in frozen horror.
Bathory stepped out onto the plank floorboards. They were clean but roughly hewn, with large gaps between them, showing the crawlspace below the house. Something whined down there in the darkness as she passed over it.
Towel in hand, her servant met her, and began to dry her off.

The Dowager Empress

OK, different people out there know different amounts of this, so...

My birth-mother, the Dowager Empress, was hospitalized due to more strokes and a heart defibrillation. the next day, she fell and had another stroke scare. Like magic, she was whisked away to an interim care facility - the kind that I'd asked about in the beginning, and got a lot of blank stares - and so is no longer staying with me.

She was also, FINALLY, approved for Medicaid. (Arse-covering, hypocritical, bureaucratic bitches...)

If only they were this cool.

However, the amount of time that trying to force any bureaucratic arm to do their bloody jobs is such that, even with her no longer living with me, school is making a speedy placement of her in to the assisted care she needs a slow and arduous process. Well, actually red tape and the people who refuse to do their damned jobs have been doing that. But either way.

In addition, the place she's staying cares for her body well enough, but she still needs care for the rest of her being; it is too easy for her to become isolated in her current situation, and she's a very social person.

Trying to take care of all this, plus school, has proved to be a failed experiment. It took two weeks just to get the cancellation of her bloody LifeAlert pushed through. Trying to get anything accomplished with these desk-flying swine is apparently a full-time job in and of itself.

(And to all of you who work at desks: if you actually answer your phone, if you reply to email, if you don't duck out when clients or prospective clients seek you, and if you don't deliberately give false information to avoid being bothered by people in need, I am not talking about you. Just so we're clear.)

I am therefore going to be taking the next semester off from college. And yes, this raises various concerns on my end. However, I am doing my best to see this problem as an opportunity. I will therefore be spending that time helping shore up my family in general as best I can, and if there is time remaining perhaps working on a few projects that have been shelved for far too long.

On the bright side, I did finally get hired somewhere. Lo, I have a pittance.

Hollywood Seems to Like O4S...

Lauren and I have been writing together for years now. And while it's been a magnificent ride, like most writers, we would like it even better if we could make a living from our work. With that in mind, I must say it's nice to know that professional writers are also reading our books. If that seems at all unlikely to you, please consider the following...

The series Penny Dreadful had Lady Bathory with the Egyptian Mythos.

True Detective had the King in Yellow and Carcosa, and this season there's a character named Bassarides.

Z Nation had characters named Garnett, Murphy, and Doc, along with a quarterback and a pale redhead.

American Horror Story had Lady Bathory in a hotel, kidnapping children and keeping them in an undead limbo.

You get the idea. You have to admit, that's a lot of coincidence in the span of a few seasons. Want to know who did it all first?  Here's a hint...

So, if you haven't already read the 2005 tale of horror and urban fantasy, now is the perfect time.
The Order of the Four Sons, Book I

See What the Other Writers Read!

There is certainly satisfaction in knowing that our genius has inspired others. Of course, it could be just a wild coincidence. Perhaps we just happened to tap into some zeitgeist before the rest of them did. Maybe there was a mind leak. Perhaps it's all just synchronicity.

I blame Huey.
